History

In the post war period, the building was inhabited by Rowland Brothers (Warehousemen) Limited, textile merchants. The cellar is inaccessible as it is still filled with bomb rubble.

William Gandy was an Exeter brewer who in 1688 was dismissed from the City Council by Mr Justice Rokeby for being a “Tory Bigot”. Another Exeter brewer, William Gandy had a brother named John. John was a Royalist priest who fell out with the puritans during the Civil War; he was later re-instated and went on to become a fellow at one of Oxford’s colleges. The pub is actually named after him because the owners did not want it known as “Bill Gandys” – it doesn’t have quite the same ring!

John Gandy was formerly Vines until mid 2001, but again the place only became a pub in the early 1980’s.
